The College of Optical, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (OMEE) consists of 3 departments, Optical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering/Mechanical Engineering and Electronic & Information Engineering. It is the first-established college containing these three disciplines in China. OMEE offers 3 master programs in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering (agricultural machinery research area) and Electronic & Information Engineering (Optoelectronic Information Engineering, and Electronics & Automation research area). OMEE also offers 2 undergraduate programs in Electronic & Information Engineering and Mechanical Design, Manufacturing & Automation, which were both entitled with “Zhejiang Provincial Key Discipline” in 2019. OMEE is equipped with MOA key laboratory of Agricultural Equipment for Southeastern Hills & Mountain, Provincial Physics Experiment Teaching Demonstration Center, ZAFU Engineering Training Center and OMEE Undergraduate Experiment Center. OMEE has 1 provincial high-level university innovation team, 1 national model branch of party building work, and 1 provincial model branch of party building work.
The college has 78 faculty members, including 12 professors, 1 senior technician, 18 associate professors, 1 senior engineer, 1 vice-senior technician, and 48 full-time lecturers with doctorate degrees. The faculty are properly structured with rich teaching and academic experience, including 1 National Excellent Teacher, 1 National Model Teacher, 1 Provincial Excellent University Teacher, 2 Provincial “Sanyuren” Outstanding Individuals, 4 candidates of Zhejiang provincial “151 Talent Project”, 2 provincial youth and middle-aged academic leaders,1 Bingtuan Talent, 2 candidates of Zhejiang provincial “Yucai Project”. In the past two years, the faculty have won 2 first prizes for provincial excellent ideological and political education case for university-level courses, 1 first prize for ZAFU graduate teaching achievements, 2 second prizes for ZAFU teaching achievements, and 3 “Honghong Award” of undergraduate quality education.
OMEE has built a solid foundation forscientific research with various research projects, academic awards and high-quality research papers. In the past five years, the faculty members hosted 15 projects funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 Outstanding Youth Project by Zhejiang Natural Science Foundation, 1 provincial Science and Technology Major Project, and 2 provincial “Lingyan” projects. The awards received by the faculty include 1 Zhejiang Natural Science Award, 2 Zhejiang Science and Technology Progress Awards, 2 National Commerce Science and Technology Awards, 1 Innovation Achievement Award of China Industry-University-Research Institute. Over 30 high-quality research papers are published every year, including two top papers published on《Nature》and《Nature Chemistry》, which won “Graphene Academic Outstanding Contribution Award” in 2017. Professor Chaoqing Dai has been recognized as the “Highly Cited Chinese Researcher” by Elsevier since 2014. Prof. Guoquan Zhou and Prof. Chaoqing Dai have been recognized as the World’s Top 1.5% scientists for 3 consecutive years.
The two undergraduate programs with a focus on agriculture and forestry ecology and the "Four New" philosophy, are aimed to cultivate applied engineers with innovative spirits, to implement the OBE concept thoroughly and to promote engineering education certification solidly. The programs focus on the cultivation of talents in the fields of intelligent optoelectronic manufacturing & detection, agricultural & forestry production equipment in hilly & mountainous areas, bamboo & wood products design, and intelligent manufacturing to serve the optoelectronic information industry and agricultural & forestry equipment industry in Zhejiang and the Yangtze River Delta.
The college is reinforced by buildingfirst-class curriculum and the ideological and political construction to improve the teaching quality of undergraduate and graduate courses. Several off-campus practice bases are established to enhance students' practical and innovative capabilities. OMEE pays attention to the cultivation of student ability of application, creativity and development in engineering, and the construction of secondary and tertiary classrooms. It also explores diverse and personalized paths to talent cultivation, career guidance in graduate school consulting, civil servant examination and job hunting, and promotion of international education. The undergraduates in OMEE have won over 900 awards in national and provincial competitions, and published over 40 papers and over 30 patents. About 52.9% of the master students in optical engineering pursued Ph.D. degree after graduation.
Looking forward to the future, OMEE will adhere to the principle of "establishing college through teaching, prospering college through scientific research, strengthening college with talents, and managing college through policies", taking the road of equal emphasis on element construction and connotative development, also taking a path of cross-integration and highlighting characteristics, and promoting the high-quality improvement and high-level development. OMEE strives to build a high-level teaching and research college by 2025, and build a research college with outstanding cross-integration by 2035.
